VENOM VOYAGE, 2023
solo exhibition
ETH / GTA EXHIBITIONS (Zurich, CH)

Curated by Fredi Fischli, Niels Olsen & Simon Gerard
For her show at gta exhibitions, ETH Zurich, Oyiri explores themes of colonial alienation and
alternative temporalities. A newly produced group of works highlights the discrepancy between the image of Guadeloupe and Martinique as idyllic holiday destinations and the reality the two islands face today – the contamination of soil and water due to pesticide used in farming, leading to severe health issues, most notably cancer.
The artist approaches the subject through the lens of her own personal involvement: her childhood memories of
happy holidays in her native country embroiled with what she faces returning as an adult
today. In VENOM VOYAGE, an immersive installation reminiscent of a travel agency, we are lured by familiar images of adventure, fun and relaxation, only to be confronted with the clash between the reality of toxic, colonized landscapes and our distorted imaginary of them.

UNBOUND: PERFORMANCE AS RUPTURE, 2023 group exhibitionJulia Stoschek Foundation (Berlin, Germany)Curated by Lisa Long and Line Ajan

In Collective Amnesia: In Memory of Logobi, artist and DJ Christelle Oyiri excavates the origin and forgotten history of Logobi,
a dance that emerged in the late 1980s in the streets of Abidjan in the Côte d’Ivoire, before being transported to the banlieues
(suburban zones) of Paris, home to many Black French communities, in the late 2000s. Drawing on the Ivorian Zouglou dance,
as well as on mime, Logobi is characterized by rapid movements that match the fast rhythms of the music, which mixes French
tecktonik with French Ivorian coupé-décalé. As Logobi enthusiasts performed on the streets and in subway stations, they filmed
their dance battles. These media archives went overlooked, not only due to the wider erasure of Black and Afrodiasporic culture
in France and Europe, but also because of a form of amnesia within those Black communities, some of whom dismissed Logobi
as a pejorative attribute of “blédards” (a derogatory term in French used against North African immigrants and their customs).
Layering 3D animations, staged scenes, and found footage, Oyiri revives the initial digital ecosystem surrounding Logobi, a
genre that both occupied public space and had a distinct life online.

HYPERFATE, 2023solo exhibitionThe Shop at Sadies Cole HQ (London, UK)Curated by Ben Broome
“Mixing visual artifacts from her upbringing with rap ephemera, this short rumination on fate sees the filmmaker place her distant memories in conversation with objects from mass culture. Doing so, she arrives at a new understanding of rappers’ place in the present imaginary.

Reflecting on rappers Tupac Shakur, PNB Rock, Pop Smoke, Takeoff and XXXTentacion’s untimely deaths, Oyiri asks, “Did these young shooting stars already know their fate?” After including images of a supernova at the beginning of HYPERFATE, her question carries an implicit cosmic weight. In her grievance, she cannot help but wonder if there’s an unexplainable prophecy at play in their deaths, as well as that of other young rappers. Her belief in this prophecy registers as a unique form of coping with this tragic history.” Text written by Nicolas Pedrero-Setzer

Scenography by Hannah Rose Stewart ´FASTER THAN THIS IS SUICIDE’ - A sonic poem, an ode to an impossible path to slowness and reflection, a remedy against mortuary accelerationnism that only leaves us drained with the ephemerality of networks.A farewell letter to Mark Fisher, and all the souls that have been crushed by the weight of an hyper-powered cruelty, that they clocked before anybody else.

BAROQUE, 2023group exhibitionChamp La Combe (Biarritz, FR)Curated by Taylor Trabulus & Lucy ChadwickClassically defined by flamboyant spectacle and chaotic form, the Baroque could be considered as the most apt of terms to describe our contemporary state, where our perception is increasingly mediated by accelerated mass consumerism, undulating technological advancement and globalisation.

This exhibition features painting, video, sculpture, performance, screenings, and installation that expand and collapse the excess and grandiosity of the traditional notions of the baroque, while also exploring its potential for subversion and critique. The works on view both challenge and reinforce the illusions of our digital age, looking at the truly Baroqu-ian boundaries between reality and fantasy.

GENTLE BATTLE, 2022solo exhibitionTramway (Glasgow, UK)Curated by Claire Jackson, Simon Gerard and Alexander Storey Gordon

Gentle Battle is the debut solo exhibition of Paris based artist, DJ, producer and
performer Christelle Oyiri (b.France, 1992). Weaving together forgotten mythologies
and the political nature of dance music, Oyiri’s work looks for alternative ways to
understand and un-braid the complex knot of history, identity and experience.
Gentle Battle charts a path through these often clouded waters, a guided journey
conceived as a series of ‘time-spaces’ in which we are invited to dwell and reflect.
Through symbolic elements as diverse as a mirror, an elephant tusk, a four-poster
bed, and a karaoke booth, Oyiri generates doors, capsules and portals to other
realities in which stories slip into histories - modern mythologies that mix and remix
personal and collective experiences.

From Ivorian and Guadeloupean descent, Oyiri’s identity is shaped by the diplomatic,
social, and metaphysical conflicts inherited from colonization, and the trickle-down
effect it has on cultural behaviours, familial history, and the experience of a wider
African diaspora.
With this conflict in mind, and specifically in the context of The Ivory Coast and the
2002 military coup and ensuing war, Oyiri’s work asks; How does warfare display
itself? ‘In the most insidious and gracious manners: in our breaths, in our bodies, in
our psyche, in our lineages, in our sound and in our music.’
In Gentle Battle, Christelle Oyiri becomes her own archivist, creating moments for
personal reflection and remembrance. Likening the exhibition to an album, she moves
lightly and sometimes humorously across different historical and autobiographical
positions, creating an intimate and kaleidoscopic dreamscape which invites us to
reflect on the possibility of unlearning, insight and healing.

REAL CORPOREAL, 2022group exhibitionGladstone Gallery (New York, US)Curated by Ben Broome
Powered by Gavin Brown Gladstone Gallery is pleased to announce Real Corporeal, a group exhibition of works by Amanda Ba, Rhea Dillon, Cyprien Gaillard, Chase Hall, Arthur Jafa, Klein, Mark Leckey, Tommy Malekoff, Jasper Marsalis, nakaya mossi, Christelle Oyiri, George Rouy, Sara Sadik, Pol Taburet and Tucker van der Wyden.
Installed across all four floors of 439 W 127th St, Real Corporeal attempts to disrupt the usual tenor of the gallery space with an arrangement of corporeally rousing work, joining artists who deal in divergent media and are convening from various localities. Contemplating the notion of the physical body as an intrusion in the traditional gallery space - a setting typically conducive only to minds and eyes - Real Corporeal offers opposition by centering the social as the fundamental dimension: the cause to gather as a catalyst for the conception, exhibition, and reception of the artworks.Further to the notion of sociality, Real Corporeal reframes the restrictive idea of generational hierarchies. If one is to conceptualise the exhibition as a family gathering, the aunts and uncles are seated interspersed amongst the younger cousins. Attention is drawn to conscious and unconscious encounters between the works’ disparate contexts; visitors trace the formal and conceptual edges of each artist’s position, inhabiting the physical and metaphysical spaces in-between. The resultant survey considers a potential sum of intergenerational parts; a metaphoric glimpse at the art-object-as-vehicle.

Christelle Oyiri (b. 1992) Paris-based artist, and producer/DJ (under the pseudonym CRYSTALLMESS). Combining film, music, performance, and sculpture, her radically interdisciplinary work deals with themes of alienation and alternative temporalities.
Faced with the deliberate erasure of narratives outside the dominant canon, Christelle Oyiri looks for information between the lines. Her research is focused on the tonalities, textures, and visual vernacular of the music, art, popular culture, and youth cultures within and outside the African diaspora.
Her work has been exhibited at institutions like Centre Pompidou (Paris), Lafayette Anticipations (Paris), Tramway (Glasgow), Auto Italia Gallery (London) , Los Angeles Nomadic Division (Los Angeles), Gladstone Gallery (NYC), Espace Arlaud (Lausanne), Ars Electronica (Austria) amongst others.
